Many people have recently been exposed to the realities of working from home for the first time due to the coronavirus pandemic. For others, working remotely and homeschooling are two activities they’ve juggled for a while. There’s no way around the fact that managing both at one time can be a lot on your plate. Here are a few key things to keep in mind if you find yourself with your hands full.
Be Flexible
It’s important to give yourself a break and accept that your kids don’t have to be learning just between the hours of 8 AM to 3 PM like they would in school. One reason people may choose to homeschool in the first place is that you can work with your kids when it’s convenient for your family, as well as when it’s necessary. Accept that you could be working or schooling basically any time of the day.
A Routine is Your Best Friend
At the same time, while you do have a lot of freedom to work with your kids when it fits your workday, it’s still best to set some kind of a routine. Wake the kids up at the same time and have them get dressed like they are going to school. Set a schedule your kids can look over and anticipate what’s next in their day. Self-discipline is going to play a big role in your success, as well as your children’s success, while you cope with working from home and homeschooling.
Teach Your Children to Wait
Help your kids wait. Inevitably, your kids will need you at times you are on a call or have a project you must complete by a certain time. It’s hard for a child to understand that sometimes you just won’t be available like you normally are. Help older children understand this by giving them a clock and show them how much time is left until you can talk with them. Younger children may respond well to your wearing a different hat on your head when you’re working.
