Google describes Millennials as “a person reaching young adulthood in the early 21st century. Millennials are known as Generation Y or the Net Generation. They are the men and women born between 1982 and 2004. One of the best traits of millennials at work is their hustle and impact in their chosen field and one great example is Amy Odell.
Who hasn’t heard of Cosmopolitan Magazine? No one. Amy Odell is the editor of Cosmopolitan.com which is the online counterpart of the magazine. Cosmopolitan.com is the largest community of millennial women on the internet today, and Odell got the post in September 2013 after being known for her work with New York Magazine, The Cut, and Buzzfeed Shift. As one of the leading millennials today, Odell has received acclaim from various bigwigs in the media and advertising industry. Forbes‘ acknowledged Odell’s work and included her in their 2015 list of “30 under 30” in media. Odell was featured in Adweek as a “New Publisher,” one of 15 young innovators who will change the magazine business according to her bio. Another great accomplishment was being selected as one of “40 under 40” in the distinguished Crain’s New York Business list and being part of the Business Fashion 500.
Odell has steered Cosmopolitan.com for the past 3 years and the tone of the magazine has expanded to include feminist, political, and LGBTQ topics. Cosmopolitan’s social media followers reached 9 million under her guidance and their number of online readers has increased to more than 34 million per month. Cosmopolitan continues to pull in more and more readers each month through its fresh editorial content, active social media, and original video production. Under Odell’s hand, Cosmopolitan continues to be a voice in engaging millennials.
At 30, Odell has written and published Tales from the Back Row: An Outsider’s View from Inside the Fashion Industry. The book is a compilation of essays describing how life is when you work in the fashion industry. It is full of funny stories and still manages to show that everyone has a need to belong. Levo discloses that her journey to the top of Cosmo’s digital chain of command wasn’t an easy one, she was fired from her first job after standing up to her boss, but she’s living proof that hard work gets you places. ThinDifference commends Odell for being one of the leading millennials in her generation. They quote “Work harder than you think need to because everything that’s worth it requires a LOT of persistence, effort, and determination.”
Here is one of Amy’s best quotes about hard work: “I’m doing all this work now, and I sometimes think, when will this get easier? But I don’t think it gets easier. I think you end up with more work and more opportunities. Nothing is going to fall into your lap. Anything worth doing is a lot of work.” This shows how working with millennials can push people to strive harder than usual. She is a prime example of how millennial managers work and truly one inspiring woman of today. Follow Amy Odell on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
