Every company has teams of workers and every team has a leader. The leader must have good leadership skills and effective communication skills in order to lead a team. But sometimes there are problems in a company or in a team that pushes a leader to change their mindset or their leadership practices. Ask yourself, what does leadership mean? What are the attributes of a leader?

There have been numerous discussions online and in real life regarding the list of leadership skills that are beneficial to their team. The question that needs answering is: How can someone be a good leader and how can they deal with possible problems? Some basic problems in leading a team is the challenge of team-building, team development, and team management according to Center for Creative Leadership. They elaborate that the real problems are “how to instill pride in a team or support the team, how to lead a big team, and what to do when taking over a new team.”

How to instill pride in a team

This is one of the common leadership training topics, how to make sure your team knows you support them. One example of this is through delegation. This act shows that you trust your team members. Delegation can also empower your colleagues to take more ownership says Center for Creative Leadership. Another way is taking the time to develop the values and ethics of the organization. As team leader, RMA advises to model these precious values every day to show the team that these said values must always be upheld.

How to lead a big team

When talking about leading a big team, we immediately imagine CEOs and Company Presidents. Harvard Business Review says that a CEO or company president with effective leadership “give everyone a voice but not a vote”. Further explaining that the trick is “They listen and solicit views but do not default to consensus-driven decision making.” HBR further explains how to be a leader for a big team such as global company, “A key practice here is setting realistic expectations up front.” This means making the team know what their position and duties are in the first place and developing a working timetable with them. “Boards and investors love a steady hand, and employees trust predictable leaders.”

How to take over a new team

This is pretty straightforward but may be hard to do in real life. Be present, be connected and show the team you mean to forge a path together. In order to show the team that you have excellent team leader skills, you must let people express their emotions. Make it safe for them to say what’s really going on for them, according to Forbes. They continue with “State that you’re here for them, you’re in this together, you’ll move through it together, everyone belongs together.” A team that see they are valued is a team that will work hard for themselves and for their leader.

LinkedIn shares “Being a leader can be tough, it can also be really rewarding.” Every day is a chance to improve leadership skills, and to develop said leadership skills in our team members. Remember that every problem has a solution as long as a leader keeps her mind open. Also, effective leadership begins when time is given to knowing how to lead and manage a team successfully. If it will help, get leadership and management training. Leading a team will not be easy but it will always be worth it as long as it’s done right.
